When I was getting ready to leave the house this morning I thought to myself 'I just want to wear something comfortable today.' The first garment that sprung to mind was this blouse. I actually found it at Target a few years ago, although it reminds me of something Victorian (not sure at all if that would be accurate:). I've never really been sure how to wear it, but love all of the details from the decorative stitching to the lace and bird-shaped buttons.

The little purse was a Florida thrift store find from earlier this summer. My sister Kate and I walked into the establishment, and there it was, just waiting for me on the shelf. I realized recently that one of the most wonderful things about my collection of second hand clothes are the memories that each garment or accessory or bag brings to mind when I pull it out of the closet. Most of those memories involve Kate, so (in a strange way) getting dressed in the morning, choosing from among my brooches, deciding on a scarf or pair of earrings...every time I run my fingers over these objects, they make me feel closer to my sister who is thousands of miles away. It sounds sad to me reading what I've written, but its really not. Its happy and hopeful and makes me look forward to the next time that we can go out on a thrifting adventure together again.

If you're reading this Kate, I love you :)

  1. I ADORE that purse! Also, I totally thought that WAS a Victorian or Edwardian blouse. The bird buttons are SO lovely. I completely agree that inanimate objects like clothing and accessories can be incredibly connected to memory and experiences...sometimes moreso than any photograph. My best and most vivid memories of my seamstress grandmother centre around clothes...the ruffled satin dress she made for me for my grade 9 "graduation", the red sweater she bought for me for my 16th birthday on one of our special trips to the department store she worked at part time, clothes she wore...the burgundy cardigan she gave me from her own closet that she had kept from the 60s...her sewing machine and her rolling pin. Nothing makes me feel closer to her than these things! Case in point: you are SOOO right!

  4. These photo's are so poignant .. bare with the floor swept clean, pictures down from the wall, & looking out the window to new adventures.

Perfect outfit for comfort and love the purse. That is really lovely that you have such a good relationship with your sister. I'm really close to mine too.

  9. Our clothing can help take the pain out of getting dressed for the elderly, disabled or handicapped individual who has limited movement or is confined to a wheelchair or bed. This in turn makes the role of the caretaker less stressful and demanding.
